Research Regarding the Microorganisms from a Veterinary Clinic

The microbial load in veterinary clinics is an essential topic to be addressed, considering the issue of multiple antibiotic resistance of some microbes. A high level of microbial contamination is often associated with a poor-hygiene of spaces, instruments or personnel, and with an increased incidence of nosocomial infections.
This research aims to analyse some microorganisms present in human and animal carriers and the traits of specific microflora in the rooms of a private veterinary clinic from Bucharest. The focus was on Staphylococcus, Enterococcus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and on Enterobacteriaceae family, by using the enrichment techniques, followed by isolation of the strains on specific solid media, and biochemical-enzymatic identification, then performing the antibiograms.
Subsequently, through the quantitative method were established the microorganisms in potential carriers, and also the viable plate count on different surfaces (in samples collected from the door panel and handle, floor and walls, top and bottom surfaces of the consultation rooms’ desks, stethoscopes) and in the air of the rooms (settling plates method and Omeliansky-based formula). The results were compared to the reference values in the legislation (Romanian Health Ministry Order 961/2016).
There were detected non-pathogenic Staphylococci, multidrug-resistant Enterococcus strains, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, yeasts and molds. For the air quality, the values (314 to 550 CFU/m3) ranged within the acceptable limits. However, concerning the room surfaces and instruments’ contamination, some critical values were noticed. It is recommended better disinfection and biosecurity protocols and new technical solutions for minimizing the bacterial growth on some critically-used surfaces (Nanoseptic self-cleaning covers/skins).

Milk urea nitrogen (MUN) is a critical biomarker for nitrogen efficiency in dairy systems, yet limited data exists for Eastern European dual-purpose breeds. This study evaluated MUN variation patterns in Romanian Brown and Romanian Simmental cattle to optimize nitrogen management and support EU environmental goals. We analyzed 4,311 test-day records from 544 cows (102 Romanian Brown, 442 Romanian Simmental) collected between 2020-2025 in year-round housed free-stall systems. Linear mixed models with REML estimation assessed effects of breed, season, lactation stage, parity, and their interactions on MUN concentration. Mean MUN was 10.93±5.50 mg/dl with significant seasonal variation (p<0.001), showing spring peaks (12.91 mg/dl) and winter lows (8.62 mg/dl) despite continuous indoor housing. A significant breed × season interaction (p<0.001) revealed differential responses: Romanian Brown exhibited greater seasonal amplitude (5.16 mg/dl range) versus Romanian Simmental (3.51 mg/dl). The model explained 33.9% of total variance with moderate repeatability (ICC=0.1145). Dual-purpose Romanian cattle show pronounced seasonal MUN patterns with breed-specific responses, indicating opportunities for targeted nutritional management and genetic selection to improve nitrogen efficiency while meeting environmental regulations.

The rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming health management practices across various industries, including dairy production. This paper examines how AI-driven tools and technologies can improve animal health monitoring, disease prevention, and overall production efficiency. Specifically, it proposes the development and use of a database derived from the Official Milk Production Control system, updated at 28-day intervals, to collect and analyze key health and production data from dairy cows. The system would use AI algorithms to analyze data patterns such as changes in milk production levels, variations in milk composition (e.g., fat, protein, and fat-to-protein ratio), somatic cell count (SCC), and milk conductivity trends. It would also consider factors like days in milk (DIM) and the lactation curve to provide a comprehensive health assessment. By correlating these parameters, the system could detect early warning signs of diseases—such as mastitis—and generate accurate predictions of potential health risks. Diagnostic reports, trend analyses, and prognoses could then be automatically compiled into easy-to-interpret graphs and summaries, which would be sent to veterinarians, farm managers, and owners for timely intervention. In addition, the paper explores critical challenges associated with implementing AI in production medicine, including ensuring data accuracy, addressing ethical considerations around data usage, and providing adequate training for farmers to effectively utilize these technologies. Through real-world examples from dairy farming operations, this study highlights AI's potential to revolutionize livestock health management while emphasizing the practical and ethical considerations necessary for successful adoption.

Incidence and Distribution of Rabies Cases in Animals in the Republic of Moldova During the Years 2020-2024

Despite the systematic measures of monitoring and immunoprophylaxis of rabies in wild and domestic fauna over several decades, rabies remains a disease of major importance both for animal health and with a high impact on public health in the Republic of Moldova. For more than half a century, prophylactic vaccinations have been carried out annually in foxes and dogs, but the incidence of disease cases evolves endemically with epidemic waves being recorded in different species of domestic and wild animals. This study presents data on the incidence of rabies cases over a 5-year period and the effectiveness of prophylactic vaccination in the case of combined vaccination methods, with the distribution of vaccines (by plane and by placing vaccines in the region of fox dens ((Lisvulpen vaccine, live attenuated SAD Bern type).
During 2020-2023, vaccination was carried out using planes under an EU-funded program. If in 2020 the number of rabies cases amounted to 82 cases (64 in domestic animals and 18 in wild animals), then in the period 2021-2023 the total number of cases decreased to 6 cases, being registered only in domestic animals, and starting with 2023, with the completion of the vaccination program in wildlife with the help of airplanes, the number of cases increased significantly, amounting to 28 cases in 2024 (25 in domestic animals and 3 in wild animals). The study demonstrates that reducing the incidence of rabies to the maximum in wildlife can only be achieved by using the method of vaccination of forest strips with the help of airplanes.

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into dairy production medicine offers transformative opportunities for herd health management, early disease detection, and nutritional optimization. This study focuses on the use of the milk fat-to-protein ratio as a key indicator of the nutritional status of dairy cows. By analyzing individual milk composition data, AI models can identify deviations from optimal values, revealing dietary imbalances such as over - or under - consumption of concentrates, insufficient structural fiber, or excessive fiber intake. In our study, 235 dairy cows were monitored across two testing periods, generating a total of 470 observations. During the first control, the distribution was dominated by Optimal animals (n=157), with fewer in the Below 1.1 category (n=83) and very few Above 1.5 (n=6). In the second control, the Below 1.1 group increased (n=105), while Optimal declined (n=134); the Above 1.5 group remained small and stable (n=7). Based on these insights, the AI system can provide automated recommendations for adjusting feed rations or regrouping animals according to their milk production performance. AI technologies enable dairy farmers and researchers to process large datasets with unprecedented precision, enhancing decision-making in feeding strategies, disease management, and genetic selection. The adoption of AI not only improves productivity and operational efficiency but also supports sustainable farming practices by optimizing resource use and reducing environmental impact. hese applications highlight AI’s capacity to power integrated e-extension solutions that improve animal health, boost production efficiency, and promote the long-term sustainability of dairy farming systems.

Assessment of Subcalvarial Hounsfield Units for Detecting Age-related Cerebral Atrophy in Dogs

The objective of this study was to determine whether Hounsfield Unit (HU) measurements in the subcalvarial region can be used as an imaging indicator of cerebral atrophy in dogs. Computed tomography scans from 20 dogs aged 2–13 years were analysed, with HU values obtained at the cranial bone, immediately beneath the calvaria, and at 1 cm depth in the cerebral parenchyma. The results demonstrated significantly lower subcalvarial HU values in dogs aged ≥8 years compared to younger subjects, consistent with an age-related reduction in cerebral density and potential atrophic changes affecting brain structure. Outlier values were identified that deviated substantially from expected ranges, suggesting possible imaging artefacts, individual anatomical variation, or measurement inconsistencies, and emphasising the importance of methodological precision in HU assessment. These findings indicate that HU may have potential as a marker of cerebral atrophy in ageing dogs, contributing to the broader understanding of canine cognitive dysfunction. Validation requires larger and more diverse populations, longitudinal monitoring, and rigorous standardisation to confirm its diagnostic relevance, reproducibility, and eventual clinical applicability.

Effects of Yeast (Saccharomyces Cerevisiae) and Nettle Flour (Urtica Dioica) Supplementation on Broiler Chickens

This study investigated the effects of dietary supplementation with yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) and nettle flour (Urtica dioica) on growth performance, carcass traits, feed efficiency, organ development in broiler chickens. A total of 90 broiler chicks were assigned to three groups: control, yeast-supplemented, and nettle-supplemented. Body weights were recorded at 3, 7, 14, 21, 28, and 35 days. At slaughter, carcass and organ weights were determined, feed intake and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were calculated. Results showed that both yeast and nettle supplementation improved body weight gain, carcass yield, and feed efficiency compared with the control. At 35 days, yeast-fed broilers reached the highest final weight (2402.67 ± 266.85 g), followed by nettles (2355.23 ± 212.92 g), versus 2019.2 ± 226.48 g in controls. FCR was superior in the yeast (1.59) and nettle (1.66) groups compared with control (2.14). Carcass evaluation indicated improved breast and thigh development in yeast-fed birds, while nettles additionally increased wing mass. Organ analysis revealed greater liver and bursa of Fabricius weights in the nettle group, suggesting immunostimulatory effects. These results demonstrate that yeast supplementation is most effective for optimizing growth performance and feed efficiency, while nettle flour provides additional benefits in immune and metabolic functions. Both additives represent promising, natural alternatives to antibiotic growth promoters in broiler production.

This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii among humans and cats in Vaslui, a county in eastern Romania. Between 2023 and 2025, individual blood serum samples were collected from 88 humans and 30 cats. These samples were analyzed by serological methods to identify specific IgG and IgM antibodies. The overall prevalence of the parasite among humans was 26.14% in 2023, 46.59% in 2024, and 27.27% in 2025.The results of the study showed that, in comparison to other age groups, the 20–25 age group consistently saw the highest number of cases of illness during the 2023–2025 period. This indicates that young people's vulnerability increased during the period under study. The overall prevalence of the parasite in cats was 0% in 2023, 9.09% in 2024 and 7.14% in 2025. These results indicate that the correct assessment of the prevalence among the cat population is very limited due to the very low number of cats tested. Analyzing the results obtained during the period 2023-2025, it can be seen that the highest number of cases of disease were recorded in the age group between 20-25 years, indicating a high vulnerability in this age category. Even if cases of toxoplasmosis are confirmed among the human population, in cats, which represent the main intermediate host, systematic testing is absent, leading to a lack of data regarding testing for toxoplasmosis in cats. This lack of data makes it impossible to carry out comparative assessments between humans and animals, causing difficulties in understanding the mechanisms of transmission of the parasite. Therefore, an alarm signal must be sounded, because correlating the data obtained in humans with those that could be obtained in cats could provide an overview of the risk and facilitate the implementation of effective control strategies.

Acinetobacter Species of Clinical Interest in Veterinary Medicine

Acinetobacter species, particularly those in the Acinetobacter calcoaceticus–baumannii (ACB) complex, are increasingly recognized as opportunistic pathogens in veterinary medicine. While traditionally associated with human nosocomial infections, recent studies document their involvement in various clinical conditions in companion animals, farm animals, and exotic species. A. baumannii, A. pittii, and A. lwoffii have been isolated from urinary, respiratory, dermal, and systemic infections in dogs, cats, and horses, among others. Molecular characterization and phenotypic assays reveal a growing presence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) and extensively drug-resistant (XDR) strains, especially in intensive care units. Resistance to fluoroquinolones, aminoglycosides, and even carbapenems was reported in several countries, with high rates of co-resistance and potential for nosocomial outbreaks. The zoonotic risk highlights the necessity of implementing standardized diagnostic protocols and molecular surveillance, while a One Health perspective is essential to monitor interspecies transmission and antimicrobial resistance trends. This review compiles current data on taxonomy, infection sites, resistance profiles, and documented outbreaks, aiming to raise awareness and inform effective therapeutic and preventive strategies.

The Importance of Biochemical Indices in Assessing the Degree Severity and Treatment Protocols in Canine Parvoviral Enteritis

Canine parvovirus is considered one of the most dangerous viral diseases affecting dogs, especially young dogs, with high variability of clinical severity depending on age, level of immunity (vaccination and maternal antibodies), foreign virulence, nutritional status and secondary bacterial comorbidities. Despite the wide diversity of vaccine strains for dog immunization, as well as well-systematized vaccination protocols, cases of the disease continue to be recorded in young dogs and cause fatal cases due to viremia states and complications related to dehydration and severe damage to the gastrointestinal tract and cardiovascular system. This study aimed to establish the importance of changes in some biochemical and hematological indices in dogs contaminated with the canine parvovirus enteritis virus. The study was conducted on 12 dogs, with a median age of 4 months, on which a retrospective-descriptive analysis was performed, diagnosed with parvovirus (CPV) based on the antigenic test (CPV Ag in all cases). The vaccination status was: 8/12 unvaccinated, 2/12 fully vaccinated, 2/12 incompletely vaccinated. The results of the research conducted found that parvovirus remains severe in young canines with a 2.5–6 month age range, affecting mainly unvaccinated individuals or those with uncertain immunity. Systemic inflammation marked by CRP ≥150 mg/L was established in 9 out of 12 dogs (75%), signs of hypoperfusion (TRC >2 s) are extremely common and may precede severe leukopenia. Profound myelosuppression (WBC <2, marked NEU) was found to be rare but critically associated with hypoglycemia/hypoalbuminemia and risk of sepsis/shock. At the same time, leukopenia was established in 2 of 12 dogs (16.7%), of which severe leukopenia (<2×10⁹/L) in 1 of 12 (8.3%), neutropenia in 3 of 12 (25%), thrombocytopenia in 4 of 12 (33.3%), hemorrhagic diarrhea in 2 of 12 cases (16.7%). Documented mortality was 1 case (8.3%). There are indications of vaccine inefficiency in fully vaccinated dogs; vaccine audit and (where possible) viral typing are necessary. Ag HI titers at presentation do not guarantee clinical protection and management should be guided by clinical status and biomarkers, not isolated titers. The above confirms that clinical severity is driven by pronounced systemic inflammation even without severe leukopenia established in all patients. This explains the critical need for early aggressive fluid therapy and prophylaxis/antibacterial therapy for enteric translocation.

Bovine enzootic leukosis (EBL), caused by the Bovine leukemia virus (BLV), is a retroviral disease of major veterinary and economic significance worldwide. Although the primary impact is on animal health, the presence of viral genetic material in milk and lymphoid tissues has raised concerns regarding food safety and possible zoonotic potential. Pasteurization considerably reduces viral infectivity, but complete inactivation remains debated, while ultra-high temperature (UHT) treatment eliminates viral RNA. BLV has not been detected in bovine muscle tissue, yet lymph nodes, spleen, and liver may act as reservoirs. The European Union applies strict eradication programs and prohibits the marketing of raw milk from BLV-positive cattle, while the United States and Canada permit products from infected animals provided thermal processing is ensured. This paper provides a systematic review of scientific evidence, international legislation, and risk management strategies. The findings emphasize the importance of harmonized global standards, strict hygiene, and continued surveillance to ensure consumer confidence and protect food safety.

Epidemiological investigations conducted on some major infectious diseases evolving in NE Romania (rabies and avian influenza) were carried out in the period 2018-2024 in both wild animals of hunting interest and domestic animals. In this regard, laboratory examinations that confirmed the diagnosis were of great importance.The diagnosis of rabies in foxes and cattle was confirmed by direct immunofluorescence (IFD) and bioassay on laboratory mice, and the diagnosis of avian influenza (flu) in swans was confirmed by Real-time RT-PCR.3612 brain samples collected from foxes and 27 brain samples from cattle were analyzed for rabies - of these, 178 samples were positive by IFD (70 samples from foxes and 27 from cattle), and 43 samples were confirmed by bioassay. Intense circulation of the rabies virus with high epidemic potential was observed in Iași and Botoșani counties, while in Neamț and Vaslui counties the virus presents a low but persistent risk profile.When infected with influenza A viruses, H5N1 strains were confirmed in 119 swans out of 197 swans examined (approx. 60%). The highest positivity rate was identified in Neamț, Botoșani and Suceava counties where swans nested in greater numbers in wetlands.

A Strategic Asset for One Health: Expanding Veterinary Pathogen Identification with Maldi-tof Ms on the Rovetemerg Platform

Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) has become a cornerstone technology in modern microbiology. Its implementation within veterinary diagnostics, specifically through the Bruker MALDI Biotyper Sirius One system at the ROVETEMERG platform, provides a rapid, high-throughput, and cost-effective method for identifying a wide spectrum of bacterial and fungal pathogens. This article delineates the analytical workflow—from sample preparation and matrix co-crystallization to spectral acquisition and bioinformatic interpretation—and evaluates its performance in a veterinary context. The technique's reliance on conserved ribosomal protein profiles generates species-specific molecular fingerprints, enabling reliable taxonomic identification. The integration of proprietary Bruker libraries with public health databases like CDC MicrobeNet significantly enhances the detection of rare, emerging, and zoonotic pathogens. Furthermore, an analysis of identification data from 2024-2025 reveals a microbial prevalence profile dominated by Escherichia coli (3249 identifications), followed by other significant veterinary pathogens such as Proteus mirabilis and Staphylococcus aureus. The platform's demonstrated efficacy in routine diagnostics, outbreak investigation, and antimicrobial stewardship underscores its pivotal role in advancing veterinary medicine and strengthening One Health surveillance systems.

The Stereotypes and the Influence on Cognitive Performance

The cognitive aspects of stereotypes focus on how our minds use mental shortcuts to process information about others quickly and efficiently. Stereotypes play a significant role in how we process social information, offering both advantages and drawbacks. On one hand, they allow us to efficiently navigate large amounts of information by filling in gaps and providing a framework for understanding others. However, stereotypes are prone to inaccuracies and can be distorted by cognitive and motivational biases, leading to unfair judgments and treatment of individuals. Two key perspectives help explain the formation of stereotypes: the cognitive perspective and the motivational perspective.

Enterobacteriaceae and Other Bacterial Contaminants in Refrigerated Meat: Evaluation and Relevance to Public Health

Refrigerated meat is among the most accessible food products for human consumption. Among different types of meat, poultry and pork are most frequently associated with cases of foodborne illness worldwide, often resulting from contamination with zoonotic bacteria. This underscores the critical importance of maintaining high levels of biosecurity throughout the entire production, processing, and marketing chain of poultry and pork meat. Based on the above, the purpose of this research was focused on establishing the presence and diversity of Enterobacteriaceae bacteria in refrigerated meat collected from commercial units of Bălți municipality, Republic of Moldova. The research was carried out on samples of refrigerated poultry and pork meat and for the isolation of bacterial flora, selective and differential cultural media were used for Gram-negative bacteria. Identification was performed by MALDI-TOF method. The analysis of bacterial species distribution isolated from poultry and pork refrigerated meat samples revealed a clear predominance of bacteria belonging to the Enterobacteriaceae family (83%), which indicates enteric contamination, most likely associated with unhygienic handling during slaughtering, a possible deficient processing, or improper storage conditions. The most commonly isolated microorganism was Escherichia coli (25%), followed by Proteus mirabilis (18%), Morganella morganii (10%), Hafnia alvei (6%), and Escherichia albertii (5%). The isolation frequency decreased to 3% for Citrobacter braakii, Klebsiella oxytoca, Moellerella wisconsensis, and Raoultella ornithinolytica. Other sporadically isolated Enterobacteriaceae were Citrobacter amalonaticus, Enterobacter hormaechei, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Providencia rustigianii, Serratia liquefaciens, Proteus vulgaris and Escherichia fergusonii. Regarding non-Enterobacteriaceae species, the most frequent was Aeromonas veronii (11 isolates), followed by Plesiomonas shigelloides (3%), Acinetobacter hemolyticus (2%) and Acinetobacter baumannii (1%).
Although major enteropathogenic bacteria were not identified, enteric contamination remains a relevant indicator for food safety, justifying the need for strict hygiene control, modernization of diagnosis, and expansion of monitoring at the national level

Peste Des Petits Ruminants Outbreak in Romania – Clinical Signs and Macroscopic Pathological Features

Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is a significant transboundary animal disease. It is a viral contagious disease of small ruminants, capable of causing considerable socioeconomic disruption in livestock-dependent regions. PPR is recognized as a growing threat to animal health and food security, particularly in the context of its’ emergence in 2024–2025, in southeastern Europe, with reported outbreaks in Romania, Greece, Bulgaria, Hungary, and Albania. Ensuring control of PPR in Romania is of utmost importance, given the country’s significant share of the EU’s small ruminant population. With approximately 11.7 million sheep and goats, ranking second in the Union, Romania requires swift recognition and response to potential outbreaks. Early identification of clinical signs and lesion patterns is a critical step in initiating timely control measures. This paper presents an assessment of the clinical manifestations and gross pathological findings observed during a 2024 PPR outbreak in Tulcea County, Romania.
