ROMANIA - general informations

If we follow on the world map the trajectory of parallel 45 North latitude we will find the territory of 237,500 sq. km of Romania at the cross-roads linking the East, the West and the South of Europe. Any traveller can notice the harmony of a relief that benefits from all geographical "aces": the Carpathians, the Danube and the Black Sea. God Himself seems to have meant it for such a destiny. That because there is no other place in the world to have, on a relatively small surface, a nature so varied (displayed in almost all its forms), so rich history (with impressive testimonies), so much traditional art gathered, not only in museums, but also embodied in the daily life. For the traveller of this end of the century, it's strange that this country is still offering, in an age of excessive urbanisation and industrialisation: the wilderness of a unique Delta, a universe full of mysteries and miracles in the villages, the seaside, the virgin mountains with valleys, canyons and caves, the spectacular painted Bukovina Monasteries, the legend of Dracula, and not only that.

About Iasi
There are towns or cities which have a real vocation for history. Iasi, the former capital of Moldavia, is one of them. Iasi is the most important political, economic and cultural centre of Moldavia and one of the oldest cities in Romania. Situated in the North-East of Romania, it used to be the crossing place of the most important commercial roads that passed through Moldavia coming from Poland, Hungary, Russia and Constantinopole. Major events in the political and cultural history of Moldavia are connected with the name of the city. Thus it is here that we can trace the roots of the Romanian national historiography. The great scholars of the 17th century - "the golden age" of Romanian culture - wrote most of their works in the city or not far from it. And it was also here that the first superior institute in the country was founded in 1835 and the first Romanian university was founded in 1860 during the reign of Al.I. Cuza. Iasi even in our days have the title of cultural capital of Romania.

Climate
Romania is a country of four seasons. The moderate-continental climate brings winters full of snow in the Carpathians, summers of almost 2.300 sunny hours on the Black Sea coast. The hospitality of the people, the food, fruits and the tasty wines warmly complete the climate.

Money
The national currency is the “leu” (plural “lei”). Euro (1 EURO = 3.5 LEI) and American Dolar bills are the most readily negotiated currency in Romania, but all the convertible currency can be change. Good prices for juice, water and wine.

Local time
Time is East European Time, two hours ahead of GMT.
